Facial Fillers

What are the different facial fillers available?

The most commonly used facial fillers are Juvederm Ultra XC®, Juvederm Ultra Plus XC®, Juvederm Volume XC, and Juvederm Volbella XC, all products in the Allergan family of aesthetic products and Dr. Madsen's product line of choice to give his clients the best results.

What is the difference between the brands of facial fillers?

The length of effectiveness varies from product to product. Some fillers last 6-9 months and others last up to 24 months. The firmness of the fillers can also vary between products depending on the location and depth of the injection. Dr. Madsen will discuss the differences in greater detail during your consultation and help you decide which facial filler is right for you.

What are facial fillers made of?

Facial fillers are made of hyaluronic acid which is a natural substance that already exists in the human body. By placing facial fillers into the subcutaneous tissue (fatty layer of tissue just under the skin) we will be providing volume and fullness to the skin. Facial fillers are biodegradable and completely biocompatible with human hyaluronic acid. Fillers contain lidocaine to help minimize discomfort during injection.

How are facial fillers different from Botox® ?

Botox® is a purified protein that blocks nerve transmission and relaxes the dynamic wrinkles caused by muscle movement when making facial expressions. Facial fillers correct static wrinkles and folds in the skin (wrinkles that persist when the face is at rest). Clinical experience indicates that combining these two therapies offers superior and longer lasting results.

Are facial fillers safe?

Facial fillers are safe and are used around the world to correct and fill lines and wrinkles on the face. There is virtually no risk of animal-based disease transmission or allergic reaction, so no allergy testing is required. The most commonly reported side effects are temporary redness, swelling, and bruising at the injection site. If any of these side effects are to occur they typically resolve within 1 to 7 days.

What should clients do before receiving treatment?

To minimize bruising or bleeding at the injection site, clients should avoid using aspirin, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications, St. John’s Wort, high doses of vitamin E, and Omega 3 fatty acid before treatment. If you are taking Plavix, Comadin or Pradaxa your prescribing physician must agree to discontinuing the use of your medication for 7 days prior to injection. Also, make sure to notify Dr. Madsen if you have previously suffered from facial cold sores or fever blisters so that he may give you an antiviral medication to prevent an outbreak. Consumption of high amounts of alcohol is prohibited before injection as it thins the blood which leads to more bruising.

How long will facial fillers last?

Our clinical experience has shown that the aesthetic correction achieved with facial fillers lasts 6-18 months.  Voluma XC for mid facial volume loss should last for 24 months. Volbella XC specifically for lips and fine lines lasts 12 months.

Evidence shows that having a touchup treatment before the product has fully resorbed will enhance the lasting effects and less facial filler may be needed in later treatments.

How long does the procedure take and how quickly will I see results?

Generally, after the consultation the procedure can take 30 minutes or less and results are practically instantaneous.

Are there any side effects?

As with any injections, some common related reactions may occur. The most common side effects are temporary redness, swelling, and bruising at the injection site. Should these side effects occur they typically resolve in 1 to 7 days.
