Laser Hair Removal
Who can get laser hair removal?
Laser hair removal is best suited for clients with dark hair. Clients with blonde, red, gray, or white hair will not benefit from this treatment.
Is there any downtime?
There is no downtime when getting laser hair removal. However, you should not shave the treated area for at least 2 days after each treatment. It is also necessary that the area being treated is not exposed to the sun or tanning beds 2 weeks before each treatment because darker skin tones pick up laser light different than light skin tones and may cause the treatment to be less effective. Avoid tanning lotions for several days prior to treatments and if you will be in the sun keep the area protected with at least an SPF 30. Also, BBL tends to dry out the skin so make sure that the area is kept moisturized. We recommend the use of SkinMedica’s TNS Body Lotion to keep skin moisturized and to improve tone and texture of the skin.
How quickly will I see a reduction in my hair growth?
Typically, you will see a 50% reduction in hair growth after each treatment but this may vary for each client.
What should I be doing to prepare for my treatments?
Once you decide to have laser hair removal you should no longer pluck or wax the area, keep your skin moisturized with a good moisturizer, and stay out of the sun as much as possible and sunscreen when necessary to be out and tanning beds.
Plucking and waxing will irritate the skin which may complicate the laser treatment and cause it to be less effective. Many clients are hesitant to shave instead of waxing or plucking because they feel it will worsen the problem; this is a myth and there is evidence to show that waxing and plucking is more irritating and actually stimulating to hair growth.
BBL tends to dry out the skin so keeping the area moisturized will ensure healthy skin and no breakouts in the area. Stay out of the sun for 2 weeks before and after each treatment because the darker the skin tone the more likely the laser light will be to pick up skin pigment and will miss the hair follicles resulting in less effective treatments.
How many treatments will I need?
Dr. Madsen recommends no less than five treatments for the best results. Some clients do require more than five treatments so “booster” treatments can be purchased individually after the initial five.
