Botox, Xeomin, Dysport, Daxxify and Jeuveau: What's the Difference — and Which One Is Right for You?
If you've been researching neurotoxin treatments, you've probably noticed that Botox isn't the only option out there anymore. Xeomin, Dysport, Daxxify, Jeuveau, and new products seemingly every few months — the market has grown significantly over the past decade, and with it, the number of questions clients bring to their consultations.
Which one lasts longer? Which one kicks in faster? Why does one practice offer Jeuveau while another uses Botox? Is newer better?
These are fair questions, and they deserve straight answers. At New Image Laser Skin Center in Chillicothe, we exclusively use Botox — and we want to explain exactly why, in a way that helps you make an informed decision regardless of where you choose to be treated.
What All Neurotoxins Have in Common
Every FDA-approved neurotoxin on the market today works the same way: by temporarily relaxing the muscles responsible for dynamic wrinkles — the lines caused by repeated facial expressions like squinting, frowning, and smiling. When those muscles relax, the overlying skin smooths out.
All of them use botulinum toxin type A as the active ingredient. All of them are administered by injection. All of them take several weeks to reach full effect. And all of them require maintenance appointments, typically every 3–4 months (with one notable exception, which we'll cover).
The differences lie in formulation, approval history, unit conversion, clinical data, and (critically) how much time each product has spent being studied and used by real providers on real patients.
The Top Five Neurotoxins, Compared
Botox (onabotulinumtoxinA) — Made by Allergan/AbbVie
FDA approved for cosmetic use: 2002
Botox is the original. It has been used medically since 1989 (first for eye muscle disorders, then expanding into therapeutic uses for migraines, hyperhidrosis, and more) before receiving cosmetic FDA approval in 2002. That's over three decades of clinical use across hundreds of millions of patients and applications.
No other neurotoxin on the market comes close to this depth of safety and efficacy data. The dosing is the most well-understood. The behavior in tissue is the most predictable. And the pool of experienced, trained providers is the largest because Botox has simply been around the longest.
Duration: 3–4 months for most patients.
Dysport (abobotulinumtoxinA) — Made by Galderma
FDA approved for cosmetic use: 2009
Dysport has been available in Europe since the 1990s and received FDA cosmetic approval in the US in 2009, making it the second neurotoxin approved after Botox. It has a meaningful amount of clinical data behind it.
The key differences from Botox: Dysport uses a different unit measurement — it is not a 1:1 conversion, which means an experienced provider has to adjust dosing accordingly. It also tends to diffuse slightly more in tissue, which can be an advantage in larger treatment areas like the forehead, but requires additional precision in smaller or more delicate areas. Some clients report that Dysport kicks in a day or two faster than Botox, though results and duration are comparable.
For providers who have spent years working with Botox's specific diffusion profile and unit dosing, switching between products introduces variability, and variability in outcome is something we're not willing to accept for our clients.

Xeomin (incobotulinumtoxinA) — Made by Merz
FDA approved for cosmetic use: 2011
Xeomin is often marketed as a "purer" neurotoxin because it's formulated without the complexing proteins found in Botox. The theoretical benefit is a reduced risk of the body developing antibodies to the product over time.
In practice, antibody resistance to neurotoxins is exceedingly rare at cosmetic doses and not a concern for the overwhelming majority of aesthetic clients. For clients receiving very high therapeutic doses over many years, it may be worth discussing, but for someone coming in for crow's feet and forehead lines every few months, the distinction is largely academic.
What Xeomin doesn't have is the same extensive clinical history. FDA approved nine years after Botox, with a narrower base of long-term outcome data and a smaller pool of providers with deep product-specific experience.
Duration: 3–4 months for most patients.
Jeuveau (prabotulinumtoxinA) — Made by Evolus
FDA approved for cosmetic use: 2019
Jeuveau is the newest neurotoxin in the traditional category, FDA-approved in 2019 and marketed heavily under the "#Newtox" brand. It was designed from the ground up as a cosmetic-only product, unlike Botox, Dysport, and Xeomin, which all have therapeutic medical applications and decades of broader clinical use supporting their safety profiles.
Jeuveau is often positioned by practices and manufacturers as a lower-cost alternative to Botox. For budget-conscious consumers, that can be appealing. But clinical differentiation from Botox is minimal. The main distinction is price point and marketing strategy, not meaningfully different outcomes or a superior mechanism.
With only a few years on the market, Jeuveau simply doesn't have the long-term data that comes with 20+ years of widespread cosmetic use. At New Image, we believe clients deserve treatments backed by the deepest possible evidence base — and Jeuveau isn't there yet.

Daxxify (daxibotulinumtoxinA-lanm) — Made by Revance
FDA approved for cosmetic use: 2022
Daxxify is the newest entrant to the market and the most structurally different from the others. Its most notable claim is duration. It is marketed to last 6–9 months, compared to the 3–4 months typical of all other neurotoxins. For clients who dislike frequent maintenance appointments, that's a genuinely interesting proposition.
However, Daxxify received FDA approval in 2022, making it the youngest product in the category by several years. Long-term data on what repeated treatment looks like across many years simply does not yet exist. It is also significantly more expensive than Botox, reflecting both its novelty and its extended duration claims.
The longevity promise is compelling, but at New Image, we're not willing to trade proven, predictable outcomes for a product still in the early stages of building its real-world track record. We'll be watching Daxxify closely as more data emerges — but for now, Botox remains the standard we trust.
Duration: Marketed at 6–9 months (longer-term data still developing).

Clinical philosophy. We take a conservative, natural-enhancement approach to every treatment. We work conservatively with treatments because our goal is not to alter your appearance but to enhance and highlight your natural features. Achieving that goal reliably, every time, requires a product we trust completely — and Botox is that product.
Evidence over novelty. Newer isn't automatically better, especially in medical aesthetics. We're not interested in being early adopters of products that haven't yet built the long-term data our clients deserve.
